彩虹小馬玩具推出的前一年，孩之寶先在電視上播出卡通節目，觀眾群是2～6歲小女孩，發展至今，共有4個動畫版本，其中最新被稱為G4的第四代動畫版本「彩虹小馬：友誼是魔術」，由曾參與「飛天小女警」（Powerpuff Girls）和「親親麻吉」（Fosters Home For Imaginary Friends）電視卡通影集製作的洛倫福斯特（Lauren Faust）主導，擔任視覺開發、創意總監、監製等多職，自2010年10月在美國有線頻道The Hub播出以來造成轟動，還產生一個歐美特殊的次文化。

Bronies們有多個專屬網站，充滿粉絲繪圖、短篇小說、辯論和討論，也以創意作品聞名，他們會以喜歡的角色為基礎，從事二次創作，製作美術、音樂、動畫和粉絲小說等作品，他們還有許多聚會和展會，也有年度展會，7月初剛在美國巴爾迪摩舉行Bronycon彩虹小馬博覽會；Bronies還經常聯合起來通過各種活動籌集的數十萬美元支持慈善事業。此一流行了大約5年時間的次文化，被稱為Bronyism。

2010年10月動畫卡通影集推出，高人氣帶動相關玩具、書籍、服裝、漫畫和其他收藏品等大賣，除了女童市場，還開發出青少年和中年男子等全新目標市場，孩之寶看到來自新彩虹小馬專營利潤增加。彩虹小馬G4在熱門貼圖留言板4chan上開始受到人們注意，紫悅與其它小馬的圖片及二創粉絲作品（Fan Art）大量出現，許多用戶愛上這個節目，與一批不喜歡這節目的用戶對抗，引發網路口水戰。

美國玩具企業龍頭之一的孩之寶（Habro），為了搶攻對手Mattel的芭比娃娃雄霸多年的小女孩玩具市場，在1983年推出一項新品硬塑料小馬，有大大的眼睛和可以梳理的尼龍鬃毛、尾巴，還可以在身上塗鴉的玩具系列。

斯派塞引用的是劇中主角紫悅（Twilight Sparkle）說過的一段話：「這是你的夢；在你的夢中你可以做到的任何事，你現在也可以做到」（This is your dream. Anything you can do in your dreams, you can do now.），並聲稱5分鐘內可以在谷歌搜尋到大量類似的話，極力否認川普太太偷改歐巴馬夫人的演說詞。根據Twitter，紫悅和她的彩虹小馬朋友們，對此不太高興。
